For the past 40 years, Ethernet, first standardized in 1983 as IEEE 802.3, has evolved into the dominant de facto data communications protocol for connecting computers, phone systems, wireless access points, shared peripherals, and industrial machines. As a result, it has pushed computer networking and Ethernet, better known as Information Technology (IT), away from the data centers, offices, and commercial buildings where Ethernet has thrived and into new industrial environments referred to as Operational Technology (OT).
